The Ripple - September 2022

A blue newsletter by The Conservationist Collective

Happy September from The Ripple, a monthly newsletter by The Conservationist Collective, designed and updated specifically for ocean people. Every month we consolidate the latest blue news, exclusive internal announcements, and share job and internship opportunities in the conservation and science communication field. We're stoked to announce new partnerships, plans, and resources for YOU this month.

Did you know that big industry is pushing deep sea mining to source minerals for needed technology (like renewables)? Even though the deep sea is severely understudied and is a crucial part of regulating our global climate system? We only have a few years to prevent mining activities from taking place, and exploration licenses have already been granted. That's why leaders, organizations, and companies are calling for at least a 10 year moratorium on deep sea mining as we innovate and find alternatives.

Learn more about this important marine conservation issue at the resources below.

Disrupting the deep sea with mining activities could have consequences we can't reverse.

Under the Hood: What's New?

Our FIRST Community Activation: International Coastal Clean-up Day

The Conservationist Collective and 4Ocean have teamed up to bring the O’ahu community together to fight plastic pollution and protect our ecosystems upstream and downstream for #InternationalCoastalCleanupDay.

Join us at Kahana Beach Park from 10-2pm on 9/17/2022 for a community clean up, starting with an educational session on local activism solutions YOU can help us bring to life.

  • Extended Producer Responsibility: Hold plastic producers accountable for their rubbish @zerowastehi

  • Hawai’i Green Fee: Statewide policy for tourists to help fund conservation and restoring natural resources @hawaiigreenfee

Participants will:

🌿 Learn about innovative ways to sift microplastic from @seedworld‘s Bouyancy Separator Device

🌿 Get activated to support local policy to protect our home

🌿 Connect with local partners like Protea Zero Waste @proteazerowaste

🌿 Get a surprise gift from 4Ocean

🌿 Get 10% off beer at Lanikai Brewing in Kailua after attending!

We recently launched a new partnership with Pique Action!

They are a media company focused on climate solutions, and we've joined up to bring ocean climate solutions to the front of everyone's feed for the rest of 2022. Explore the video lessons on their Instagram: @piqueaction

Our team united in Kauai for a work retreat - it was joyous :)

After nearly two years of working remotely, we were able to get together and celebrate the accomplishments of this growing company as a team - in nature.

Blue News

The High Seas Treaty Is Still Undecided

This treaty would have been the first step to managing the global ocean beyond national jurisdiction, helping us combat exploitative practices that take place without enforcement. Nations have been under four negotiations now for this treaty, and this most recent one unfortunately did not reach a final decision. Once this treaty is established, we can behind to work on managing and protecting the world's oceans to effectively support marine species and crucial ecosystems! Something like this has never been done before, and we hope the next round of negotiations results in world leaders finding common ground to move this groundbreaking piece of legislation forward.

World leaders described the treaty as necessary to achieve the proposed goal of protecting more than 30% of the ocean by 2030. We can be part of demanding this treaty by calling on our own elected officials at the federal level.

Indonesia Expands Marine Protected Areas

Indonesia has been a world frontrunner in establishing and expanding new marine protected areas (MPA) this year! Earlier in 2022 the region developed four new MPAs surrounding some of its most diverse and valuable coastal areas. These regions protect many threatened species including the green sea turtle, the scalloped hammerhead shark, many coral reef species, and hundreds of unique ecosystems.

The goal is to achieve protection for more than 10% of their ocean resources by 2030 and so far they are almost half way to their goal. The current surface area of the installed MPAs around the Indonesian islands are cumulatively larger than the U.S. State of Connecticut! Yeah, Indo!

California Going Electric by 2035!

Recently the California Air Resources Board approved the Advanced Clean Cars Rule II that aims to set the state on a trajectory toward its rapidly growing zero emission car policy by the year 2035. This astounding goal was put forth in recent elections in an effort to reduce climate warming pollution and rapidly contribute to cleaner air for the state.

The rule established a designated road map that will lead California to 100% of its new cars and light trucks to be completely emission free by the year 2035. The regulation only impacts new car sales, and current vehicles on the road will remain legal to operate and own, however they may face stricter standards. The ruling has a variety of additional elements to offer including consumer rebates, eligibility requirements, conventional car standards, and more. Overall Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed more than $2.7 billion between 2022 and 2023, and $3.9 billion over the next three years to begin facilitating the ambitious road map.

Our goal is to get as many people as possible involved in marine conservation.

Community Feature: Coral Reefs

That's it. Corals are the community feature, because coastal communities rely heavily on them for survival. Coral reef health is crucial and directly supports food security for subsistence fishers, as habitat and fish nurseries, coastal protection from wave action and intense weather, guards us from erosion and sea level rise, and is integral to our recreational relationship to the sea.
