Best Time to be a Shipwreck Hunter

Now is the BEST time in history to discover and recover ancient shipwrecks. Early explorers had proportionately more accidents than discoveries at sea, leaving many vessels strewn across many of the world’s oceans hidden away from the rest of the world, until now.

New technologies have made scanning areas of sea floor easier and less expensive, even enabling amateurs to participate in searches. Deep sea exploration is in its infancy and modern tools aided by climate change continue to uncover secrets of the deep. Read more

Indigenous Tribes Gain Funding to Manage Coasts

Three Native American communities in California, Washington, and Maine will collectively receive more than $750k to develop climate resilience under the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Proposed projects culminate tribal knowledge and modern data to establish innovative coastal and environmental solutions in their regions. Many spokespeople are excited to continue rekindling native roots to their coastal environments, which NOAA has been a large proponent of in the past few decades, and can now support funding directly with federal legislation.

New Species of Orcas?!😲

Increasing understandings of differences in orca ecotypes has resulted in scientists (finally) proposing separate species designations for two well known populations in the north east Pacific. The Biggs and resident populations of orcas share many similarities as they are both from the Orcinus family, but their notable lack of intermixing, unique social structures, and genetic variation are some of the reasons why the new species designation was proposed. Age Matters, Protecting Ocean Life

Dominican Republic Meets 30×30!

This week, the Dominican Republic just became the first Caribbean country to reach the 30×30 goal, protecting 30% of its land and waters by 2030 — six years ahead of schedule!

The milestone was reached with the expansion of the Marine Mammal Sanctuary of Silver and Navidad Banks, and the creation of the Marine Sanctuary Orlando Jorge Mera. Both of these sanctuaries are crucial safe haven for marine species, with the region being known as the humpback whales largest known mating and calving grounds in the world. These milestones help increase connectivity between reserves, for wildlife to pass through whilst still being protected. SeaLegacy shared the incredible announcement yesterday in partnership with the Dominican Republic.
